People who have to care for elderly relatives - often their own parents - in addition to the demands of work and family life are to receive training in care techniques and an entitlement to help, such as respite holidays. Councils will have to assess what support carers need. Everyone will be offered advice and guidance and means-tested financial assistance to pay for services will be available to those who qualify.

Big decisions have to be taken in the next twelve months if the European Union is to be saved. This is the message from UEF president Andrew Duff MEP to mark Schuman Day, 9 May.

"The post-war project of European unification is under attack. Nationalist forces are rising again across Europe as the response of the current leadership to the deep economic crisis proves to be inadequate. So here is a seven-point programme with big things that, taken together, will reverse the trend to disunity:-

  • Tring Fairtrade Renewal
    Article: May 7, 2013

On Saturday 20th April 2013 the Tring Town Mayor, Councillor Nick Hollinghurst was presented with the Fairtade Foundation's Certificate in a ceremony in Tring Market Place which formally renewed Tring's status as a Fairtrade Town.

Michael Demidecki, Secretary of the Justice & Peace Group, made the presentation. The Justice & Peace Group, which is affiliated to Churches Together in Tring, acts as the Fairtrade Steering Group for the town. As such, they carried out a rigorous assessment of the extent to which Fairtrade products are accessible, sold and used within the town to ensure that Tring did still in fact qualify for fairtrade status.

A property development scheme partly using railway land and aimed at providing more than 1,000 student units - the so-called CB1 Development - has generated significant funds to improve Cambridge Station. £4.25 million has been released by Brookgate, the Cambridge based company behind CB1, as part of a land deal with Network Rail and a 3-way agreement between Brookgate, Network Rail and Cambridge City Council.

  • Paul Zukhowskyj
    Article: May 5, 2013

On Friday morning Hertfordshire Liberal Democrats were delighted when their colleague Paul Zukhowskyj took a seat from the Conservatives. This was a double triumph since the losing Conservative was no other than the former Executive Member in the administration, Stuart Pile, who had been responsible for Highways and the Environment.

  • Nick Ron and Adrian IV
    Article: May 4, 2013

Liberal Democrat County Councillors, Nick Hollinghurst, representing Tring & the Villages, and Ron Tindall, representing Hemel Hempstead St Pauls, have been re-elected.

They are seen here in County Hall in under the watchful gaze of Pope Hadrian IV, Hertfordshire's only pope (so far).

Both were comfortably re-elected with good majorities, easily seeing off the pretensions of UKIP, who trailed 4th behind Labour in Hemel Hempstead St Pauls and who managed a poor 3rd place in Tring only because of Labour's weakness in the area.

  • County Councillor Malcolm Cowan with his Passport and Bus Pass - but which is harder to get in Hertfordshire?
    Article: Apr 25, 2013
Liberal Democrat County Councillors have been battling to make sure local people get the bus passes they are entitled to.
Local residents from across the County have faced long delays for bus pass renewals, with some facing lengthy waits and having to resubmit documents.
County Councillor Kareen Hastrick (Meriden Tudor) said, "I have had to intervene where local residents have had to wait so long their old passes have run out. Fortunately bus companies have granted people a grace period, despite their passes having expired.
"I have raised this problem in County Hall repeatedly and asked why so many people are having to wait so long and not had a proper response. This is yet another service at County Hall that the conservatives are mismanaging, although if people cannot get on buses at least they won't be bounced around over the potholed roads that the Conservatives have also failed to deal with."
"I have raised this with County Council staff several times now and have not had a satisfactory answer about what is going on, which I find all the more strange given how many of my fellow County Councillors have been helping local residents across the Caunty with the same issue!"
No-one is safe from this problem, County Councillor Malcolm Cowan (Handside and Peartree) commented "I recently sent off my renewals for my passport and my bus pass, both on the same day.
