The Liberal Democrat motion asking the county council to co-ordinate the fight to safe Hertfordshire's post offices was backed by all parties at a meeting last Tuesday.
County councillor Malcolm Cowan, who proposed the motion said: 'Dr Beeching is back in business - last time he wrecked our railway network, this time his successors are doing the same to post offices. They are at the heart of sustainable communities, which we are all supposed to be fighting for.'
Malcolm added: 'Again it is the wrong solution; the government has taken key parts of business away from post offices - pensions books, car tax renewal is now online and many others. That is why there is a problem. Cutting the number of branches does not make much difference to the finances.'
The motion called upon the county council to collect information about the problems that will occur if these branches closeand raise these with the senior management of the Post Office.
After the meeting, Malcolm added: 'It was pleasing to get everyone's support; it is noticeable that on all the big issues - the 10,000 homes and this, it is the LibDems who are leading the fight.
