Government today have released a list of 638 schools that must improve their standards, close or become undemocratic Academies. In Herfordshire eight schools are listed on this list.
County Councillor Aislinn Lee, Liberal Democrat Education Spokesperson said: 'The timing of this republished list is wholly inappropriate. This is a time where new schools are being sought by parents and children are getting ready to start their new school in September. What makes it worse is that these schools are already listed in the league tables as having low results. The Schools Minister is just trying to find a new spin on an old story.'
Aislinn continued: 'In Hertfordshire we already have a programme that supports schools when they are in difficulty or have a dip in their results. This has always been seen as successful and allows schools to stay under local government control. Academies, however, are outside local government control and we would not be able to help if they get into difficulties. We have two Academies already planned in Hertfordshire and we would resist having any more undemocratic institutions forced on us.'
On the planned academies Aislinn said: 'The two academies are Frances Coombe and Bushey Hall. Both are progressing well and should not have been listed on this list. These kind of announcements are designed to make government look good but actually they are just damaging to the schools and their reputations.'
