Media and journalism students attended a Question Time session with Sal Brinton, Liberal Democrat Prospective MP for Watford and Linda Jack Liberal Democrat European Candidate earlier this week.
The session was held in the college's recording studio and was filmed by the college. Students asked a wide range of questions from what the difference was between an MP and an MEP, to what Europe delivers for us here in Watford. Some students said they wanted Britain to join the Euro and asked why we had not done so already.
Sal Brinton, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate said: 'It was very refreshing to hear from these students. Younger adults who have grown up in the world of globalisation do not see Europe as a threat and clearly see the advantages of trading and working with our European colleagues' .'
As the questions moved away from Europe and on to the current scandal of MPs expenses it was clear from the reaction of the audience that everyone was very angry. The students asked very direct questions about why they should trust MPs and how MPs from each of the parties differ were forthcoming. Sal Brinton said 'I said to the students that all politicians will have to rebuild trust with the public, and the first step to that is the full publication of MPs expenses, and reform of the allowances system. It is vital that this happens urgently.'
Linda Jack, Liberal Democrat European Candidate said: 'I could hear the anger in the questions, and I can hear it clearly from residents as I knock on doors. My response to this is if residents are angry, imagine how we feel, many of us put much of our free time, our own money into campaigning. We work for free, yet we get the anger of residents. We are as angry as they are.'
After the 'Question Time' session Sal and Linda toured the outstanding new buildings being built for September 2010 and heard about the facilities that will be open to all Watford residents , including student-run hairdressing and beauty salons .
