Conservative County Councillors yesterday refused yet another chance to exclude New Barnfield as a potential site for an incinerator. At a full meeting of Hertfordshire County Council, local Lib Dem county councillor Malcolm Cowan tabled a motion suggesting now was the time to exclude New Barnfield as a potential site for the proposed incinerator and tell all potential bidders of this.
All Lib Dem representatives on the Council voted to abandon New Barnfield, and were joined by a small number of Conservative councillors.
Derrick Ashley, Conservative council spokesperson for the Environment, told the meeting that he thought 'New Barnfield was a suitable place for a facility', despite knowing full well that for the schoolchildren next door it would be a disaster.
The motion was defeated 20 votes to 47.
Lib Dem County Councillor Malcolm Cowan, who proposed the motion, commented 'Yet again the Conservatives at County Hall have demonstrated they care less about disadvantaged children than they do about toeing the party line. Even local Conservatives, such as Councillor Clare Berry, spoke against the motion. Councillor Bill Storey, who lives a few hundred yards from the site, seems happy to see plans for an incinerator there continue.'
The unwillingness of some local Conservative councillors to abandon New Barnfield as a location shows gaps appearing in the supposed massed ranks of support behind MP, Grant Shapps.
Parliamentary candidate Paul Z said 'We are still facing a massive Conservative determination to let New Barnfield go ahead. Even these local councillors from Welwyn Hatfield have refused to join his campaign, just months after Grant endorsed them to the public.'
