Plans to build 5,500 houses east of Luton on OUR Green Belt were confirmed at Friday's meeting of the Luton and central Bedfordshire Joint Planning Committee despite thousands of objections received through the recent consultation process.
Nigel Quinton, Hitchin & Harpenden PPC, said "While local Tory councillors and our Tory MP insist they are against these proposals, their colleagues continue to vote for the plan - it is rank hypocrisy."
All Labour and Conservative Councillors voted against a Liberal Democrat move to scrap the idea. "Tories keep saying they are against it yet at every opportunity they vote for it, no Tory Councillor has ever voted against this plan," said Luton Liberal Democrat Councillor Qurban Hussain.
Liberal Democrats in North Herts and in Luton have consistently opposed the plan. Labour has been the main proposer of the plan but the Tories have supported it with their votes, despite making plenty of vote-grabbing noises pretending to be opposed to it.
"The Tories' duplicity takes your breath away. Of the 8,166 individual responses to the Joint Committee's recent consultation exercise 7,322 were objections to the East of Luton plan. Yet the Tory and Labour Councillors continually ignore these objections," commented Nigel.
