Anti-fascist campaigners were out in force in Adeyfield West this morning, joined by Dr Richard Grayson, Hemel Hempstead's Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate. Together, they delivered leaflets to the entire ward encouraging people to use their vote against the BNP in Thursday's Dacorum Borough Council by-election.
Dr Grayson said,
"I was pleased to support Unite Against Fascism's work in Hemel this morning. Members of my family were very active in the campaign against fascism in the 1930s. They took part in demonstrations against Oswald Mosley's British Union of Fascists. That included the BUF rally at Olympia in 1934 and the 'Battle of Cable Street' in 1936, when the fascists were targeting Jewish people in the East End of London. They also supported the Republican forces fighting in the Spanish Civil War against Franco's Nazi-backed regime. I see the campaign against the BNP as being part of that long campaign to defeat racism in this country, and fascism more widely, and I am proud to take part."
